It's Children's Day, yipee!!!

The 27th of May is recognized world over as the day of the child. These precious ones are celebrated and given some extra special treats. Today is one of such days to celebrate our children, biological or not and to be grateful to God for the gift of these amazing little ones.

Children - cute smiles, ringing laughter, cuddly cuddly beings, inquisitive minds and sometimes jaw dropping question, and their scent ehn! It's difficult not to just love them.

I remember back then, when I still qualified to celebrate Children's Day as a child, it was marked with march past at the stadium, white socks (and gloves in some cases), hair bonded Binta-style (I so miss Binta!), ice-cream (called lolly) - beautiful memories.

As much as we take the day out to celebrate our kids, keep behind your mind, that the child you love, you discipline. Discipline is not exclusive to the stick. you can discipline without using one. I know for African parents, the proverb 'spare the rod, spoil the child' is a creed to live by, but, what example are you setting for them? They learn a lot from your unspoken communication - be great examples to/for them. Set them on the right path and be there to listen to them. Let them learn from you, so they won't pick up wrong things outside.

As we celebrate with those gaily dressed kids, remember there are others who are not so opportuned. Some that have next to no clothes, some who are hungry and have no clean water to drink, some riddled with diseases and sicknesses, some abandoned by the one(s) that brought them forth, some on the streets hawking to fend for their families. Remember these ones and reach out to them.

Look for a child around you today and be a blessing to them. You can never tell who that kid you're holding their hands will be tomorrow. And, "tomorrow" is just around the corner!

Note: If you're in Ibadan (Oyo State, Nigeria) and would love to reach out to some children, I recommend the Rehabilitation Centre for The Disabled at Temidire in Moniya.
